Rigid Wrap and CelluClay Quik-Sculpting Kit from Activa Products Review

For this review, my kids and I got to try out the Rigid Wrap and CelluClay Quik Sculpting Kit.  The volcano caught my son's eye and the candy bowl caught my daughter's eye.  Surprising though when they opened the package, looked at the materials and then consulted the downloadable idea ebook called ACTÍVA Products' Favorite Sculpture KIDS CRAFTS, they chose to work on a project - together!  They chose to do the pumpkin craft.

I have to admit, I've done quite a few Plaster of Paris/clay crafts in our many homeschooling years.  I wasn't real thrilled that they chose this particular craft, but thought it best to give it a fair shake.  I mean, how bad could a wheat/gluten free/non-toxic and non-carcinogenic materials be?

Once the balloon was blown up for the pumpkin, they set to work with wrapping it in the Ridgid Wrap.  Dipping the trimmed strips in water,  I was amazed that there was no nasty smell, no warming of materials, no icky feeling on the skin and it wasn't exceptionally messy.  Between the two of them, they were able to wet the strips and encircle the balloon with a primary coat of the wrap and then with another coat, easily smoothing and and setting along the way.  Because we live in a tropical climate, drying time was probably longer than normal, but, none the less when it was dry, it seemed solid.

The leaf portion was easily made by putting wetting two pieces of Ridgid Wrap together, allowing some dry time and then trimming into a leaf shape. We did try to attach it directly to the pumpkin with the moist Ridgid Wrap but it did not hold.  But, a glue gun provided an easy fix to this dilemma!

I do have to admit that it was nice not to have to work about clothes, table, skin, etc while they were doing this project!

The Cellu-Clay was interesting.  Right off the bat you can tell that it's very different.  It's fibrous in content without a doubt.  Putting the clay into a baggie and mixing with water, my kids were easily able to make this.  The texture is definitely not clay like and we had some texture issues in that it felt more like dough than clay.  My youngest was not into that at all but did try his hand at making a few little pots, balls and logs.  My daughter tried to make some facial features for the pumpkin but found the clay was not easy to work with for this purpose.

All in all we all give the Rigid Wrap portion of this kit a big thumbs up!  And now we have a neat pumpkin to display for the fall time.
