Grace for the Homeschooling Mom

The Quest

It seems the new buzz word is “grace”. My friends’ blog names, book titles, and talks are filled with it. Apparently, the world is not filled with enough of it. Often, people have not heard of it in practical terms nor understand its true meaning. Grace is something given. It’s free. It’s selfless. It’s love.

A few days ago, we stopped to get a before dinner snack on the way home from co-op. Though often the giver, this time I was a recipient of a random act of kindness. As I was finishing our order and stepped up to register, suddenly a man was asked, “Anything else?”. To which he replied, “Whatever she is having.” My debt was paid in full. That was a perfect act of grace. And also a humbling reminder of where original grace comes from, as we both verbally blessed each other before walking away. I have thought many times on this event since then, and I feel loved.

The Journey

Whether it is your first year of home schooling or you are a veteran- you require a copious amount of grace. When I consider what it takes to homeschool: commitment, TIME, mental capacity, patience, energy, organization, relationships, sacrifice… Coupled with: ministry work, not-for-profit work, being a business woman, time consuming lifestyle choices (regular juicing, growing food, made from scratch meals, etc.), I realize just how easy it is to forget to have grace.

If I was able to merge my health coach skills into a “Got Grace?” campaign, it would look something like this: CONCIOUSNESS

Choose grace. It is a choice. Choose to receive it. Choose to gift it.
Open your heart. Children are a blessing. (Even when they fight or don’t do their school work.)
Needs: Spiritual, Physical, Emotional- are these in balance?
Change of scenery. Get outdoors regularly to play or explore.
If something doesn’t work, try something else. Be open to change.
One day at a time. And if that is too much, one breath at a time is ok too.
Understand hormones can be at play. Yours or theirs.
Sleep will make or break you or your student. Take a nap if you need one. Make sleep a priority.
Never give up.
Exercise. Next to sleep, exercise helps balance the load of life like nothing else.
Show grace to your leaders. They are people too and need support just like you.
Simplify your life. Let what you don’t need fall away.

The Gift

As for this writing, I began with a completely quiet household (unusual, but it was the coldest night of the year here in Florida). It was mid-morning, and though all five children from preschool to college age live at home, I didn’t even hear a mouse peeping (at least for a while)! To accept a gift of grace is a conscious choice. I could have easily squandered the quiet time given earlier to pen my thoughts, and because I didn’t, it made it much easier when the phone rang multiple times waking the up crew before I finished my writing.

Grace is always a gift, but sometimes it shows up unexpectedly. Recognize it. Celebrate it.
And ask yourself, how will you gift grace today?
