To wet that writing whistle, 14 minute power surges are included. These are daily writing warm ups that are not to be graded, but, may be used in a future writing assignment. These are a great way to chase away writing anxiety.
Our Experience with The Power in Your Hands: Writing Nonfiction in High School, 2nd Edition Review
When I reviewed this curriculum with my oldest 2 years ago, I loved Sharon's writing style and the overall ease of the curriculum. My reluctant writer was at ease with the layout of the instruction and the fact that Mom didn't have to be hovering over him.
Fast forward a couple of years and this updated 2nd edition is now being reviewed by my second born. Unlike his predecessor, writing is a breeze for him. He quickly makes his way through the introductory lessons that were so helpful to his reluctant writing older brother. I love how easy it is to gear the level and depth of writing to each child. What flexibility! Before I know it, he's on his way to writing his first paper - an opinion essay on teens and credit cards.
Another blessing of this curriculum is the Grading Toolbox for Teachers. This section helps you, the teacher, grade your child's written work. Sharon's examples of an A, B, C, D, and F papers are key in showing content per grade score. Equally helpful in this edition is the evaluation forms/rubrics for each essay assignment.
Using the evaluation form/rubrics, first read the paper through to evaluate the content. Next, read it for grammar and mechanics. In this way, the student receives a grade for content and a grade for grammar and mechanics. This enables the student to really see their strengths and weaknesses in writing.
As with my first born, this updated version is a definite hit with my present 9th grader. I highly recommend The Power in Your Hands: Writing Nonfiction in High School, 2nd Edition to any homeschooled high schooler!
