Beric The Briton Review

Beric the Briton Review

This spirited audio production of G.A. Henty's classic, Beric the Briton, is masterfully reenacted by an all-star cast:

  • Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, King Lear)

  • Tom Baker  (Dr. Who)

  • Cathy Sara (Downtown Abbey)

  • John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones)

  • Brian Cox (Bourne Identity, Brave Heart)

  • Honeysuckle Weeks (Foyle's War)

Just to name a few.

In this two hour presentation, the listener is taken back to the struggle of Britania during the Roman invasion.  A young man by the name of Beric is appointed to be the chief of his tribe.  Through his wisdom in dealing with the Romans, he encourages his men to flight like the Romans do.  He trains them in this way and wins their trust.

After the King of Britania dies, Emperor Nero requests a large portion of his treasure.  The Queen's request for fairness is denied, and the people decide to revolt.  In the resulting loss, Beric and his Britons are taken captive and sent off to Rome.  During his ill-fated voyage, Beric meets Julius who tells him of the teachings of Christus.  This meeting changes his life forever.

Once in Rome, Beric and his followers and divided up among the four gladiator schools.  Emperor Nero takes a special interest in Beric and his training.  This is key as one day Julius and a girl from his past are brought up into the Colosseum and it will be up to Beric to decide upon his honor, his heart and his faith.

Our Experience with Beric the Briton

We love audio theater.  This production was fantastic from all angles.  The condensed version caught the spirit of the original Henty book, had a wonderful cast of voices, appropriate music plus special effects and kept the action moving throughout the entire cd.

We are also big on car schooling, so, listening to some historical fiction is not out of the ordinary for our family.  Beric the Briton fit right into our taxiing schedule!

My kids love hearing accounts of valor, honor and redemption found within Henty's books.  In this story, one quote that stood out to us all was "Greatness comes through places we least expect it."  This also inspired some rich discussion regarding this topic.

The only thing I would change is the lower age limit.  This particular story deals with Christians being martyred in the Roman Colosseum.  It got a bit intense for my 6 year old.  I probably would move the lower age limit to 8.
