Zeezok Publishing LLC has long been a household word in our homeschoool. Years ago we were introduced to their unique and wonderful film guides. Guaranteed to help all learners gain new insight into a plethora of movies, these guides were enjoyed immensely. And now with their newest offering, Music Appreciation Book 1: for the Elementary Grades , we were eager to dive into the world of classical music.
Zeezok Publishing takes the fear and work out of teaching music appreciation at home with this new curriculum. Now it is a snap for any parent to teach the great composes and instill a love and appreciation for this genre.
Music Appreciation Book 1: for the Elementary Grades Review
Music Appreciation Book 1 is a multi-sensory approach to learning about classical music geared towards elementary aged students. Zeezok Publishing combines the musical score with wonderfully written living books and hands on activities. Covering the years 1685-1828 with Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini and Schubert.
The set includes:
1 Lapbook DVD
5 disc Audio Cds
These are all best used together in order to receive the full benefit of the entire curriculum.
The workbook is your guide and starting point. Each of the 7 composers is allotted four weeks of study. Among those weeks are a variety of activities from reading, listening, writing and doing. Though the guide is thorough, it is also flexible to meet the unique needs of each child. Activities are adaptable to the age of the child.
For my 6 year old son and I , we start our adventure by diving into Niccolo Paganini. Each of the four weeks is beautifully laid out on the first page of this section. It's a snap to see what's expected and what's ahead. No surprises!
Each week starts with a reading from the biography book. Afterwards there are comprehension questions in the workbook to be completed. Since my son is only 6, we take this opportunity to sit together and discuss the chapter using these comprehension questions.
Next, the character qualities of fun-living and diligent are introduced and explained.
Interesting tidbits about Paganini follow. This section is probably geared toward an older child. Though some of it does stick in my Kindergartner's head.
Geography is also incorporated with a map of Italy and a color by number map. In this way older and younger can children can learn!
Hands on activities include making Spaghetti Soup, taking on more responsibility at home, learning Italian words and lapbooking work.
Older kids are invited and guided through an exercise on how to develop Personal Music Criteria.
And that's JUST for the FIRST week!
After the background on Paganini is laid, his music is listened to from the cds in week 4.
Amazing! Niccolo Paganini was truly the "Master of Strings"
For grades 5-8, Music Appreciation Book 2: for the Middle Grades is in the works and will include Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Foster, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and MacDowell.
Final Thoughts on Music Appreciation Book1: for the Elementary Grades
While my son and I enjoyed our experience, the pace was a little to fast for a Kindergartner. For us, taking 2-3 weeks per suggested week is a better pace.
