High School Book One:  Elements of Art and Composition  from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. is a self-contained, comprehensive art program designed for homeschooled high school aged students that aids in the creative process while developing observational skills.

This curriculum teaches drawing by teaching the elements of art and principles of composition.  Students will discover their creative strengths along with these elements through beautiful color reproductions of European Art.

Obtaining the necessary supplies for the first semester  (a drawing pencil set, eraser, sharpener and drawing pad), we set off on our Art adventure.

Our objective for Unit 1?  To become more visually aware of an element of art, such as space, in one's own environment.  Unit 1 opens with space.  After an explanation about active and non active space,  an outdoor drawing activity follows.

In the next lesson, a medieval artist, Vittore Carpaccio and his painting Young Knight in a Landscape is studied.  Active and non-active space is pointed out and an assignment to draw a face is given.

In the third lesson of this unit, the topic of learning is how to use space in a drawing.   A group of simple objects is arranged with the student taking time to draw what they see.

Lesson four further expands on this concept with an inspirational passage from St. George and the Dragon.  The student is encouraged to draw a scene as described from the passage.

Our Experience with ARTistic Pursuits High School Book One Elements of Art and Composition

The reason for us wanting to review this curriculum is two-fold.  First, I've used it for the elementary grades and loved it.  I was curious to see how ARTistic Pursuits would work for my older kids. Second, I have two kids needing an art credit for high school.  But, I don't have the funds to hire a tutor and I don't have a lot of extra time to devote to teaching an art class.  This Artistic Pursuits' book made it a snap!  Both my children were able to open the book, read, gather supplies and create on their own without much assistance from me.  Most importantly though, my high schoolers are learning to observe the world around them as they look for and focus on one element of art at a time while drawing and blocking out other things on a page.

ARTistic Pursuits is the curriculum for creativity.  And we whole heatedly recommend it!
