Our Experience with Horizons Kindergarten Math Set
Honestly, I would have never picked up a Horizons Math curriculum on my own as I had some preconceived notions of "public school in a box"! But, given the chance to review it with my 5 year old, curiosity got the better of me.
I was very surprised to see the variety within these pages. Kindergartners are notoriously all over the board in regards to their abilities. (Note - I'm not implying this is a bad thing. It's just a fact that is overlooked many times in formal schooling!) This curriculum offers enough instruction in identifying shapes and colors to get those that don't already know this skill a chance to learn them without holding those that already know them in the throes of boredom!
I was also impressed with the amount of review woven into this curriculum. Many boxed sets I've encountered in the past are lax in this aspect. Not Horizons/Alpha Omega! This company does not expect the student to master a concept upon introduction. Each concept is reviewed for a week after the initial introduciton. Then, for the next two months the concept will be presented every two weeks for 2-3 lessons. After a bit of a break, the concept is then reviewed about every two weeks until mastery is obtained.
My son enjoyed using "his math book" and would always ask to do more. The colorful pages and just the right amount of "thinking work" made this a good choice for him. Overall, I give the Horizons Kindergarten Math Set from Alpha Omega Publishers a thumbs up for being a good foundational start to a budding math adventure.
