Attend a Historical Reenactment - Reenergize Learning!

It's about "that time" again.  The school year is winding down and the end to this chapter is in sight.  It's really easy to feel winded and ready for a break.

Need to put some wind back into your History sails?

I highly recommend attending a history reenactment or going to a talk given by an 'expert' in a particular time period - even if it's not related to the time period you are studying. You'll be amazed and thrilled to catch a bit of their excitement!

Recently we attending The Battle of Narcoosee Mill's Education Day.  Many volunteers manned 14 different stations ranging from Women's Wear to Cannons.   The day also included firing musket and cannon demonstrations!

You can tell each reenactor is knowledgeable about this time period.  But, one particular gentleman stood out to us.  For one of the sessions, our family was his only audience.  So, we were able to gather in close and engage him individually which he wholeheartedly obliged!

His passion and enthusiasm for the Civil War Navy was so contagious!  My boys loved talking to him and hearing the stories and learning more about the ships and equipment pertaining to this time period.

Catching this reenactment was definitely what we needed to fill those sails and set us on course again.  We look forward in anticipation to studying the Civil War this coming year!

  1. We LOVE events like this - and you are right - there is something special and energizing to get a personal talk/tour from someone passionate about their topic! The Civil War is our fetish while traveling! We will definitely have to check out The Battle of Narcoosee site next time we are in Florida!

Has your family participated in the Jr. Ranger program at National Parks? The kids earn badges by doing short (usually) workbooks about the park. It's a great incentive to be engaged in learning about where you are, and our kids have gotten so much more out of the parks. Some of our kids have collected over 100 badges!
