Apologia General Science - Module 10 Labs
Welcome back to Apologia General Science Module 10 Labs!
It's lab time!
For this session only my son will be participating. The reason is because the majority of these labs need to be set up ahead of time and observed over a number of days. This is best done in the home and not in co-op.
Starting with "Factors That Affect Bacterial Growth". Set up was very easy.... the waiting was a different story!
We had a "plain" solution of chicken bouillon, salt, vinegar and "cold".
After a few days it was strikingly obvious which glass had more 'critters' growing in it. It was remarkable to think about how blessed we are to have refrigeration as a means of food preservation!
Checking to see how well a sign ("Hello") can be read through each solution.
MORE SCIENCE TOOLS
My son really did not want to do "Yeast is a decomposer" AKA Fuzzy Bananas. But, he was a trooper and went along.
A slice of banana is put into 2 ziploc bags, but one is sprinkled with yeast. Leave the "bags of yuckiness" for a few days and observe.
He was so grossed out by this experiment that we don't have any 'after' photos. Let's just say this is one he won't soon forget!
Onto a more pleasant topic: Tugor Pressure
This one is easy enough. Put a stalk of wilted celery with leaves into water with food coloring.
We woke up in the morning to see this:
And the next day a little more blue was pulled up into the leaves.
This module had a lot to do with things that gave my 7th grader the willies - namely bacteria!
I have to say, in spite of everything, he handled himself well!
